Dessert plate (diameter 8.5 inch) painted with a named view 'Near Udolpho Italy', within a broad gilt flower and leaf scroll band. Crowned crossed batons mark and titled on base. The painting of this scene was perhaps influenced by the popularity of the book 'The Mysteries of Udolpho', a novel published in 1794 by the Gothic authoress Anne Radcliffe (1764-1823)
